The recent naming of the region which is situated in the southern portion of the Dordogne Department, comes from the dominant tints of the vineyards which appear purple from a distance. The people of Bergerac and the Perigord Pourpre are one. The region of Bergerac gave its name to Cyrano, perhaps because the man with the big nose embodies volubility, good spirit and generosity.
